What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence based approach that looks at why a behaviour is happening and builds skills and environments so the person doesn't need to rely on it. It focuses on quality of life, not punishment or control.

Who can access behaviour support through the NDIS?

Behaviour support is usually funded under Improved Relationships or Improved Daily Living in a participant's plan. If you're not sure whether it's in the plan, send it through and we'll check it with you.

What happens in the first few sessions?

We spend time getting to know the participant, the people around them and the settings where things are hard. That information becomes a functional assessment, which then shapes the behaviour support plan.

Do you work with restrictive practices?

Where restrictive practices are already in place, we work to reduce and eliminate them over time, in line with NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements, and we report as required.

How are families and carers involved?

Closely. Strategies only work if they're used consistently, so we train and support families, carers and other providers so everyone is doing the same thing the same way.

What does Employment Support actually involve?

Employment counselling and vocational assessment, work readiness and life skills, job finding and placement, on-the-job coaching, and long-term retention support. We offer 1:1 sessions plus group sessions, in-home and in the community, so skills are built in real-life settings.

Do I need to already know what job I want?

No. Most participants start without a clear answer. We use assessment, industry exploration and real work experience to narrow it down to something that fits.

Which NDIS funding covers employment support?

Most often Capacity Building, Finding & Keeping a Job. School leavers may have SLES funding. Where Capacity Building isn't available, employment focused supports can often be delivered using Core funding.

What about school leavers and SLES?

We deliver school leaver employment transition planning, including SLES funded supports where they sit in the plan. The NDIS is shifting towards broader employment support, so we build the pathway around the participant rather than the label.

Does support stop once someone gets a job?

No. On-the-job coaching and retention support continue after placement, through shift changes, new tasks and any bumps along the way.

Why do these two services work better together?

Behavioural barriers are usually the reason employment attempts stall. Working on both at once means the skills built in behaviour support are practised immediately in a real work context.

Do I have to use both services?

Not at all. Some participants only need employment support, others only behaviour support. We meet each person where they are and build what makes sense for them.

Will I have to repeat my story to two different teams?

No. One team, one plan. Our employment and behaviour support workers share the same information and the same goals for the participant.

How do the two plans stay aligned?

The behaviour support plan and the employment goals are written to reinforce each other, and reviewed together so progress in one shows up in the other.

Is it more expensive to use both?

The supports are billed against their own NDIS line items exactly as they would be with separate providers. Combining them under one team doesn't add cost, it removes duplication.
